NICARAGUA – SJM Organic

San Juan de Las Mulas cacao is grown by smallholders farmers in Matiguas, Central Nicaragua. The cacao has a pleasant balance between sweetness, nuttiness and fruity tones of yellow fruit and melon. It is not a surprise that this cacao was in 2019 awarded as Cocoa of Excellence.

Supply Chain

100% traceable supply chain. Farmers bring wet beans to a central unit where they are fermented and dried. Manual screening and picking and packing in 50 kg bags. Bags are transported to Corinto for shipment.

People

350 smallholder farming families, members of Flor de Pancasan cooperative who directly from higher prices for premium cacao, organic and SPP certification. They are also trained by the cooperative and have access to agricultural supplies through the cooperative

Forest & Nature

Cacao grows in small-scale agroforestry and is intercropped with other food and cash crops. This system promotes biodiversity, prevents deforestation and protects water availability. Farmers only use organic fertilizers and no pesticides.
