TANZANIA – KOKOA KAMILI ORGANIC

In Kilombero Valley, bordering the Udzungwa Mountain national park, smallholder farmers are producing an amazing cacao with a round profile, red fruits such as cherries and berries, floral notes and a smooth and chocolaty finish.

Quality

  • Variety: Trinitario with some Neo-Nacional
  • Flavour: Round profile with remarkable note of sour cherry, red fruits such, berries and dreid plums. A very delicate and surprising floral note of violet
  • Fermentation: Pre-drainage, follwed by fermentation in 3-tier cascade wooden boxes
  • Drying: Sun-dried for 5 to 7 days

EU, USDA and JAS organic certification

Supply Chain

100% traceable supply chain. Farmers sell wet beans at the farm gate,  followed by centralised fermentation and drying. Manual screening and packing in 60 kg jute bags. Bags are transported to Dar es Salaam for shipment.

People

700 smallholder farmers benefit directly from higher prices for premium, organic certified cacao. 4000 farmers are trained in good agricultural practices. Kokoa Kamili employs 40 people.

Forest & Nature

Cacao grows in small-scale agroforestry, intercropped with shade trees, banana, corn and other crops, forming a buffer zone to the adjoining National Park. The Southern Tanzania Elephant Project works with farmers to reduce and solve conflicts of elephant-human interaction.
